Ann Winter-Vann, PhD

Clinical Regulatory Writing Lead
Dr. Ann Winter-Vann joined Whitsell Innovations (WI) in 2007. In addition to project management and team leadership, she writes clinical research and regulatory documents for the US Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency, and for submission to China. Dr. Winter-Vann’s area of expertise is oncology, but she also has experience in the therapeutic areas of virology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, central nervous system, respiratory, cardiology, immunology, allergy, and dermatology.
In addition to regulatory documents, Dr. Winter-Vann authors publications, educational modules, sales aids, and patient education materials. She also leads in-house training sessions on regulatory and medical writing. Since 2010, Dr. Winter-Vann has taught scientific writing to first-year graduate students at the University of North Carolina, and is currently the president of the Carolinas Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association. Prior to joining WI, Dr. Winter-Vann was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research, which was funded by the American Cancer Society, focused on cell signaling and metastasis. Dr. Winter-Vann received her PhD in molecular cancer biology from Duke University in 2004, where she was supported by a fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In her graduate research, Dr. Winter-Vann studied the role of methotrexate on posttranslational processing and cell signaling in oncogenesis. As an extension of that research,
Dr. Winter-Vann helped identify a novel small molecule inhibitor of isoprenylcysteine carboxymethyltransferase
, which is currently being investigated as a chemotherapeutic agent.
Previously, Dr. Winter-Vann worked as a research associate at the agricultural biotechnology unit of CIBA-GEIGY (now Syngenta) in Research Triangle Park, NC, and in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr. Winter-Vann received her BS in biology from Duke University.
