Chapel Hill, NC – June 2022 – Whitsell Innovations, Inc. (WI) partnership with Howard University
As part of a corporate initiative to encourage and develop the scholarship of medical/regulatory writing and attract elite talent to the life sciences industry, WI developed a program to connect with Howard University scholars. At the invitation of Dr. Earl B. Ettienne, Associate Professor in Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy Sciences at the Howard University College of Pharmacy and Director of Graduate Programs and Industry Partnerships at Howard University, Robin Whitsell, Founder and President, presented a 12-week seminar on drug development and regulatory writing to a group of 10 PhD/PharmD graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
Ms. Whitsell presented the workshop virtually from January 2022 through April 2022. The main objective was to introduce scholars in scientific and clinical fields to the drug development and regulatory process. The seminar leveraged WI-created educational materials and consisted of weekly sessions, with occasional guest lecturers from WI and other industry members.
“Our industry is faced with big problems that we need to solve,” says Ms. Whitsell. “Without a group of people that reflect and represent the patient populations we serve, we don’t have the intellectual power to find solutions.” Dr. Ettienne adds, “This collaboration fulfills one of my core beliefs and strategy to have a praxis based approach to regulatory writing as we develop diverse talent for today’s boardrooms. There is strength in diversity and Howard exemplifies using cutting edge approaches to develop talent that can lead.”
Volunteering time to develop and present this seminar is an extension of WI’s commitment to reduce barriers for entry into the medical writing field. WI provides an internship program to train new medical writers, Ms. Whitsell is an active member of the Diversity Alliance for Science (winning Volunteer of the Year in 2019 and serving as a committee chair or board member from 2015 to present), and in 2021 Ms. Whitsell was accepted to the Merck Drexel Advanced Leadership Program for Diverse Suppliers.
